I enjoyed the extreme pleasure of attending and hosting the 101 Runners Mardi Gras Indian funk band concert at Tipitina’s in New Orleans last month on a Saturday night before Mardi Gras, and I’ve been listening to the recordings this week while composing the liner notes for the album that’s being made by Chris Jones & Tracey Freeman from the show that night. I’ll play the music for you in a month or so when it’s released on CD at JazzFest, but tonight I’m featuring an earlier 101 Runners concert at Tipitina’s on November 15, 2008 with Big Chief Monk Boudreaux and War Chief Juan Pardo leading the vocals, Tom Worrell on keyboards, Billy Iuso on guitar, Kirk Joseph on tuba, Jimmy Carpenter on baritone saxophone, Ajay Mallery on drums, Lionel Batiste Jr. on the bass drum, Chris Jones on congas, and the great Alfred “Uganda” Roberts guesting on congas as well. The Sinclair On The Air show is broadcasting tonight from the Bohemian National Home in Detroit and is heard every Saturday night at midnight over Salto Wereld Radio-99.4 FM and Cable 104.6 as a service of Radio Free Amsterdam.
