I grew up in the suburbs of Detroit (Huntington Woods), and with my older brother when I was 14 (he was 16) we went to the Minor Key a few times, seeing Miles Davis, Bobby Timmons, Sonny Stitt, and Art Blakey one night. I think I also saw Yusel Lateef, Ahmad Jamal, the MJQ, AJQ and others, although maybe not at the Minor Key. I used to hear Frantic Ernie Durham advertise that for "One lean green you can make the scene" at some ballroom or other. I am reading the book on the Detroit Jazz Scene Before Motown (a good read) and am studying jazz piano. So I am curious about this time in Detroit, especially trying to figure out when I would have heard Miles and Blakey at the Minor Key. I remember that Stitt and Timmons stole the show with Blakey, but that Davis, after blowing a few notes, stole the waitress. The two staggered back out at the end of the night, grinning, so he could blow a few more notes. Call me at 415-846-3188 if you can. Michael
